• ஆப்கானிஸ்தானில் ஊரடங்கு
  • அமெரிக்கா கடந்த 2001-ம் ஆண்டு அக்டோபர் மாதம் போர் தொடுத்தது. இதில் அங்கு ஆட்சியிலிருந்தத லீபான்கள் விரட்டியடிக்கப்பட்டு, ஜனநாயக ஆட்சி கொண்டு வரப்பட்டது. ஆனாலும் அதே ஆண்டு தலீபான்களுக்கும், ஆப்கானிஸ்தான் அரசுக்கும் இடையே உள்நாட்டு போர் தொடங்கியது.
  • இந்த சூழலில் கடந்த 2020 பிப்ரவரி மாதம் தலீபான் பயங்கரவாத அமைப்புடன் அமெரிக்க அரசு வரலாற்று சிறப்புமிக்க ஒப்பந்தம் ஒன்றை ஏற்படுத்தியது.
  • இந்த ஒப்பந்தத்தில் உறுதியளித்தபடி ஆப்கானிஸ்தானில் இருந்து அமெரிக்கா தலைமையிலான நேட்டோபடைகள் வெளியேறிவருகின்றன.

  • The Taliban have won a string of battlefield victories in recent weeks as the United States-led foreign forces are about to complete pull-out from Afghanistan after 20 years.
  • The armed group was removed from power in a US-led invasion in 2001 following the September 11 attacks on US soil, but it gradually regained strength, carrying out numerous attacks on foreign as well as Afghan forces in the past 20 years.
  • The armed group largely kept its promise not to target US security interests, it continued to carry out deadly attacks against Afghan forces and civilians, saying the Western-backed Kabul administration was not a party to the February 2020 agreement signed in the Qatari capital, Doha.

• Japan has best passport, India ranks 85
  • The Henley’s passport index has retained Japan on top of passport rankings as it offers visa-free access to 191 destinations around the world.
  • India is in the middle with rank 85, but three of its SAARC fellow members — Pakistan, Nepal (104) and Afghanistan — bring up the rear with countries in the throes of civil war such as Libya, Somalia, Yemen, Syria and Iraq.
  • Indian passport holders can access 58 countries in the world without a prior visa and share the spot with Tajikistan.
  • Singapore continues to be in second place since the rankings were last announced in July 2019, while South Korea and Germany are tied for the third place.
  • The index has placed Pakistan on the 107th position. Pakistani passport holders can have visa-free access to 32 countries.

• 15,000-year-old viruses discovered in Tibetan glacier ice
  • Scientists who study glacier ice have found viruses nearly 15,000 years old in two ice samples taken from the Tibetan Plateau in China. Most of those viruses, which survived because they had remained frozen, are unlike any viruses that have been cataloged to date.
  • Published today in the journal Microbiome, could help scientists understand how viruses have evolved over centuries. For this study, the scientists also created a new, ultra-clean method of analyzing microbes and viruses in ice without contaminating it.

• China unveils world’s fastest train
  • China unveiled a maglev train capable of a top speed of 600 kph.The maximum speed would make the train, self-developed by China and manufactured in the coastal city of Qingdao, the fastest ground vehicle globally.
  • Using electro-magnetic force, the maglev train “levitates” above the track with no contact between body and rail.
  • At 600 kph, it would only take 2.5 hours to travel from Beijing to Shanghai by train – a journey of more than 1,000 km (620 miles).
    By comparison, the journey would take 3 hours by plane and 5.5 hours by high-speed rail.

• India to get its first pod taxi service between Noida Airport and Film City
  • India will see its first pod taxi running between Noida Airport and Noida Film City. As per the latest reports, it will start running on the tracks as soon as flights start operating from Noida Airport.
  • Pod taxis have been a popular mode of commute in several western countries, and can accommodate four to six passengers per car. With this project, India is also set to experiment with this mode of commute.
  • Indian Port Rail and Ropeway Corporation Limited (IPRCL) have submitted the final DPR (Detailed Project Report) to Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (Yeida) on June 13, 2021, for the pod taxi project, which will run around 14 km from Film City to Noida Airport.

  • After a wait of more than a decade, the Indian Navy is set to receive its first set of multi-role helicopters as America is set to hand over three MH-60 Romeo helicopters to the force in the United States in July.
  • The first batch of Indian pilots has also reached the US for training on the helicopters which would be arriving in India next year in July.
