TNPSC Preparation can be broadly classified into 3 stages –

Preliminary Examination:
The preliminary examination is the first stage of TNPSC preparation. It is an objective type test consisting of 200 multiple choice questions from General Studies. The duration of the examination is 2 hours 30 minutes. Candidates have to score a minimum of 90 marks out of 200 to qualify for the mains examination.

Mains Examination:
The mains examination is the second stage of TNPSC preparation. It consists of two papers – Paper I and Paper II. Paper I is an objective type test consisting of 200 multiple choice questions from General Studies. The duration of the examination is 3 hours. Candidates have to score a minimum of 90 marks out of 200 to qualify for Paper II. Paper II is a descriptive type test consisting of 3 essays and 2 translations from Tamil to English and vice versa. The duration of the examination is 3 hours. Candidates have to score a minimum of 60% marks in Paper II to qualify for the interview.

Interview:
The interview is the final stage of TNPSC preparation. Candidates who have qualified in the mains examination are eligible for the interview.
